Artist Statement

In 2022 I bought myself a 1/2 acre piece of land from the sale of a condo I owned with my ex-husband. The house on the property had burned down, and the only structure that remained was a dilapidated hunting shed. I decided to renovate it into a tiny off grid cabin and made the intention to spend the next five years “troubling” my inherited relationship with my body, the land, and others.

Because I was not only questioning everything but also needing to create an infrastructure to support my life and practice I confined my art to a series of letters called, “Letters from the Woods.” Over the next four years I wrote and sent a letter for every lunar cycle. Because I was interested in disrupting my relationship with colonial structures, following the moon seemed like a good place to begin to structure my life outside of the western calendar. The letters became a way to explore a variety of topics with a critical eye as well as a tangible way to create a rhythm that honors time as a cycle rather than a machine.

These are the 44 letters, or what remain of them, that I have sent over the last four years. For my fifth and final year I am creating the Unsettling Almanac based on this experience, 44 letters later.
