“Deforestation: the removal of a forest or stand of trees where the land is thereafter converted to a non-forest use.” The old Bush Farm Road forest in Steinbach, Manitoba joins the global trend of trees cut down for development. The complex ecosystem that has been thriving there has no place in a society that values land primarily a means for capital. For the past 150 years while much of Steinbach’s land was converted into farmland and urban space, this little forest somehow avoided being torn down. But all good things come to an end, albeit sometimes prematurely. The least I can do is witness it. So here is the first in my series on the deforestation of Bush Farm Road.
