My Best Work is Invisible

In point
Muscles strained
I do my best work alone

I never learned to dance
In front of a crowd
My finest work is unseen

Building my skill
One day I will show it all off
These long hours alone

I imagine you in the audience
Or just around the corner
Too much, too close

I imagine I am unaware
And you see
Careful, perfect, each step

I imagine I’m caught
In the perfect space between
Self and consciousness

I imagine

I never learned to dance
Not for me or for you
But alone, unseen

Ever waiting
Ever in my head
Invisible
